roundtable #2

Is the war against terrorism financially sound for the world economy or is it injust spending too much money on unnecessary military power? Is it justified in having troops die in Afghanistan to fight a war against a government and group that isn't even recognized as sovereign? –grosenbaum

Well this is a tough one. The question is money or security, which one is the most important. I think in the past security has always claimed the top spot here, and I cannot see it not winning out now. Terrorism is the real deal and it is only now in these days that we are getting that into our heads. Places like Israel have to deal with this everyday but only now do we actually give it any attention. It is sad that it took us this long to realize this. But I do think that not money can complain about the money being spent if it gives a better peace of mind about the situation. –justin

I have to admit, I had problems feeling safe before that day... I didn't like to walk anywhere alone, or go to strange places... But since then it's been even worse, I imagine the most horrible things happening.... It's getting better, but do you know why? Because I know that there are people out there who understand that human life means more than anything else in the world, and they are out there trying to protect that... It's worth a lot more than money. I understand that the economy of a country has an impact on it's people. But there are many people all over the world who survive with little or no money, and it wouldn't be long for it to recover, it would be a rough go of it for a while, but we'd still be way better off than 80% of the world. –alison

this is a real tough one. I'm not sure really what to say if this war is puting into a economy trouble, we should stop then I feel that we have already made our point yes, we need to protect ourselves and we have, but why are we still there and why are we still bombing them? –justin

See, I believe that economy and security go hand in hand. I think that we need money to be safe, because the world revolves around cash. If we give up our economy for security, eventually there will be nothing left to protect. Granted, I believe that terrorism is being dealt with the way it should be at this point, but once you stop gaining any ground, why waste time and money by staying where you are no longer needed? –michael

I agree with you Michael what is the point of being there anymore? if its to get Osma, well we might as well leave they have no idea where he is anyways and they pretty much have bombed everything they could why stay anymore? I feel safe being in america again –justin

Justin you say that America has made their point. And what point is that? That they can drop a ton of bombs on a country, flush out all the civlians and then leave. I rather think that if they don't continue with this and get Osama and Omar then they will have done way more harm than good in this situation. It might seem like such a little thing, but these two guys are heading up the terrorism that is happening in many places. They are more than just figureheads of a country. The last thing that the States needs is too walk away without catching those two. It will show them as being weak and not effective, and will open them up for more attacks, simply because there would be little in the way of consequences. –joel

The cost is always justified when it comes to the welfare of the international society. Terrorism, as we all know, is not a localized phenomenon and is not sequestered in a remote area for people to ignore. The time has come for us to reclaim dignity for all people. Unfortunately no other nation besides the US has a military force designed to undertake such a task and deliver it with such determination. The European community has the resources, but not the internal support to wage such a costly battle. The cost is not only monetary, but it also contains the value of life, fortitude, and patriotism. The US has always held such a role and will continue to do so for years to come. The cost is justified when you are the only one willing to stand the ground. –jeff

Patriotism can go too far Jeff. I agree that the States has to finish what they started, but there has to be an end to it all. –joel

I don't know what to say about this anymore
I personally don't agree with the bombings, just because there could have been other ways of going about it
I don't understand War and I don't like it
thats one reason I choose not to ever join a military force
I could never kill anyone for my country. I have pride in my country yes, but not to the point of killing for it
thats why I have a hard time with the subject of what we our doing there. its a sad sad thing –justin

Yeah the U.S. does have quite the military. I agree that something needs to be done about terrorism. The sad part about all of this is no matter what is done, it isn't going to stop. There are always people somewhere who think it is ok to kill for their religion. Just think of the whacko pro-lifers who go around killing abortion doctors. In a sense it is the same thing, with the person killing for religion or some wierd idea. I am glad I am not in the position of trying to figure out how to handle this situation. It's a toughie. –joel
