As ours will be.

light-hearted, sometimes serious. How you approach the subject is up to you...
but remember, participation does reward itself in the end.
Perhaps some information on another player? Or maybe even a beloved exemption...
what will YOU work hard for?

Something to get your thoughts going...
The Boston City Council wants to stop using the word "minority" in official business
because it is outdated and offensive, reports The Boston Globe. City Councilor
Charles Yancey wants to use the words "people of color" instead. Is the word
"minority" offensive? Is this a judgemental term or a mathematical term? Does it
have the same meaning now as it did in the past? You really do need to *earn*
this reward... the best poster will be getting something pretty special after
all. Let the posting begin! -aspasia
WOW! I have no idea about this one but as I do think of it, "minority" is kind of an offensive term its like we are saying because you are not white and not born in America, you are lower than us. WOW! I have never really even thought about this word until now. I do think we should get rid of it, since there are many people of color out there with great paying jobs, who live in nice houses, go to schools and everything that is suppose to be "ideal" to being a white american. so we can't really say the are a "minority" for the simple fact that they do live in America now and who cares if they are not white. They live here, so now they are apart of America, just not some minority." -justin
Minority basically means less. There are less blacks in America. It denotes some sort of inferiority because we choose to. Political Correctness can go too far and I honestly believe this is one of those cases. Christmas is another example. AMny public schools will no longer have Christmas on their holidays because it may offend people of other religions. Instead they use Winter Break. Did they think that they might be offending me, who is of the Christian religion. No of course not. I understand political correctness to an extent, but when it is taken to extremes it is just plain stupid. -joel
When using the word "minority" it is not usually meant to express something negative about people of different nationalities. I agree with Joel when he says that political correctiveness can go too far. If you think about it, after the word minority is abolished and "people of colour" is implemented as the replacement, sombody, somewhere is going to have a problem with it. There has to be limits. We as a society cannot protest every little thing that we disagree with. If we do that, nothing that we ever say or do will be considered appropriate. -michael
Yes the word minority is offensive. I does denote that there are less of you and because of that you have no power and the majority rule strictly because they have the numbers. That fact about majority rule, is very interesting, it suggests that because there are more then the decisions that are made are right and just, when often times it is the opposite. -mysty
The fact is that even though there are less ethnic people (the minority) it is not as if they are not given equal opportunity to advance in society. Discrimination is, and always will be present, but times are much more advanced then they have ever been. Another point, just because a race has the majority does not mean that they are the ones who make the decisions at all. There are many countries, states, provinces, ruled by people who would be considered the minority. -michael
The word minority is not offensive at all. It's just a word used to represent a group of people that does not have as many members as other groups in a society or nation. But can we really segregate and clearly divide people into groups? Of course! Based on genders, races, color of skins, sexual orientations, hobbies, ages, etc., we can divide people into different groups easily. If you are in a group that has less people than other groups, does it necessarily mean that you will be discriminated or hated? It shouldn't, but unfortunately, there are indeed a lot of cases of discriminative crimes in our country. However, I don't think the word "minority" has any unrespectful meaning. To me it just means "A group of less people." Let's not second guess the meaning of the word or it will bring us endless debates and headache. -ethan
This topic is uninteresting to me, so I'll just say I agree with Ethan. It's just a word. Sticks and stones...... -omar
I don't think the word minority is offensive and there really is not reason for it so be changed. It really makes no sense to go and change all the public records, etc... to make an unnecessary statement. I would think that the term 'people of color' is even more offensive. -jeff
Plan and simple: there are worst things that people can and have been called. I would rather be refered to as part of a minority than other more hateful words. -michael
Less numbers doesn't mean less power or less respect or anything like that. It simply means less numbers. Now I can see where representation by population means minority means less power. I am not exactly sure what to think of this. Being from a smaller area of the country myself, we basically have no power out here to make political decisions for the country. Everything is controlled out east. However, they do have WAY more people out there so shouldn't they have more power, it would seem unfair that more people have less power, that doesn't sound right either. So what's the options then? -joel
What also gets me about this is they want to replace "minority" with "people of color" How is this any better? They are still pointing out the differences. Is that what they have the problem with? -joel
Well, well, well! What an interesting way to start the show... I don't think that any of us are going to agree on this exactly (which I believe will be the case with all of these topics) But in my opinion, everybody everywhere as our society has grown older has become more about me and less about we. While I agree that the most heineous act in civilization has been slavery (which has come very, very far, thank God) next being Hitler and his freak beliefs. And you know what? Everyone here is right, there are negative connotations to every word, because that is what the society around us has trained our minds to believe... Some people think outside the box, and see a word as a word, technically they should not use colored people. If they want to get sticky and not affect ANYONE, they should refer to each individual race as a different thing. People of Indian descent, people of Spanish descent, People of American descent, People of Canadian descent (because believe me there are differences between the last two) You know what I mean. That way the only people that "People of Canadian descent" can get angry at for those words are the people who named the country those many, many, years ago. Hey, just F.Y.I. for those of you who are not Canadian (or just don't know) the people in Ottawa want to change our national anthem so it doesn't say "In all thy SONS command" anymore. Women!!! Go figure, I'm a woman and I have no problem with the word sons in there, I know that there are woman here too, but I don't need to petition to get the national anthem changed to PROVE it. Anyway, enough of my rant, and back to the show. (c: -alison
