sin #2 lust: lust is to desire more than what others give. it is to treat someone as an object of desire rather than as human.

challenge #8: persuasion cont.

For Jeff:
I would say that in general (although not always I suppose) some who is involved in prostitution is only harming themselves, yet when someone is dealing drugs they are harming others. How would you respond to this argument?

For Omar:
If this prostitute is willing to sacrifice her own body for money or goods, she may be very willing to sacrifice any number of other things. How would you respond to this thought? –joel

I would have to say that my client harms society no more than a prostitute. A prostitute spreads sickness and disease while some of my client's customers have real medicinal needs. You may be surprised to learn that black market asthma medicine is actually cheaper than that provided by the local pharmacy. Its potency, granted, is less than that received "legally" and its dosage must be increased, but financially it is more sound for the sick to seek his supply. -jeff

"If this prostitute is willing to sacrifice her own body for money or goods, she may be very willing to sacrifice any number of other things. How would you respond to this thought?"
Well, a girl doesn't just wake up one morning and say "hey, I think i'll be a prostitute". As I said, prostitutes do this in desperation. I feel that my client would be more beneficial than the drug-dealer because it would be so simple for her to start over....how would a prostitute be harmful to a community of 6 people? A drug-dealer, on the other hand would no doubt be a hinderance since most dealers are addicts themselves..... -omar

First off... I'd like to ask Jeff about the reliability of his client... He is a drug dealer! What makes you think that he will change his ways in the new land? –michael

Considering the circumstances, the right to survive is a highly priced item to reciprocate. My client would be extremely grateful to the additional survivors for saving his life and would assist them in any way he could. –jeff

I would like to ask Omar why his arguments about prostitues doing what they do as a means of survival couldn't also be said about drug dealers. I would like to ask Jeff about his statement that a drug dealer would be good at "distribution" for the community. Wouldn't he still have the mentality of "the goods go to the one who will pay the highest price"? Wouldn't this ultimately hurt the community? –sandee

As the community grew, standard sociological patterns may occur that would resemble favoritism toward the rich. However, social patterns that complex would take at least four generations to occur, if the land they find is fertile enough to sustain a rapid growing commune. My client would be deceased by that time. –jeff

"I would like to ask Omar why his arguments about prostitues doing what they do as a means of survival couldn't also be said about drug dealers."
Thats ridiculous. Drug-dealers OBVIOUSLY have money.....how else would they obtain the drugs in the first place? A prostitute ONLY has her body. -omar

For both attorneys:
Since the one chosen to leave would be part of the chosen pioneers of a new community, she/he would have to at least have a niche in the new community. Both clients can be argued to be able to fend for themselves as they possess certain survival skills, so is there some other role they are able to play in building the community?
As for the prostiture, for instance, isn't it riskier to bring her along since she might be an unknown carrier of STDs and if her role, similar to the pregnant woman's, is one to reproduce, wouldn't that reduce the population further? –li

Please allow me to reiterate some of the points I made earlier in my case:
1. He would be instrumental in the protection and distribution of community-based property within the new community.
2. He would be a valued asset during any trade negotiations with neighboring communities.
3. He would also, as you stated, be of assistance during those times necessary to protect the community from outside forces. –jeff

Thank you Jeff. Btw I'm sorry for the way I put across my question. It seems that I've misunderstood the scenario. I thought that they were going to be stuck on some isolated island with no other communities, please disregard whatever I wrote about the reproduction thing. In hindsight it looks really dumb, oops. haha –li

Response to Li: "Since the one chosen to leave would be part of the chosen pioneers of a new community...is there some other role they are able to play in building the community?"
"As for the prostiture...wouldn't that reduce the population further?"
Who cares what their skills are? A human being is a human being. As I said, the drug-dealer would be a hinderance because of their probable addiction. Yes, it is true that the prostitute could have an STD....but so could the drug-dealer. He could easily be a carrier due to IV drugs etc. Also, who says that they must reproduce? I would think that they'd be found and rescued by the time they even think of it. And I sincerley doubt the pregnant mother would do that anyways..... –omar

Sheeeesh......I am sitting here waiting for either more questions to be raised in response to the litigation challenge, but there is no one around......then of course, there is the issue of whether I chose the box with the XXX in it....I really hope I did....this is the first round I have really really needed one. It would be perfect timing. I have decided to wait to see if I get the exemption prior to taking the xquiz myself. My suspicions have moved and I hope that they are correct.....WHAT A GAME! –jeff (confessional)

This new challenge will be fun, I just know it! I'm not sure if I'm playing it right or not, but whatever. I'm just going to wait for it to play out....and with a little luck, I'll get that XX. –omar (confessional)
