You five agents (alison, joel, li, michael, sandee) will now act as the jury to a most unusual case. You must side with one of either two viewpoints (jeff's or omar's). The person that has the most in agreement will win their prize. One person has a box worth $9 that will go to the jackpot (kitty). The other has a box with an XX. You will not know which one has which.
Story: On a burning island in the not so distant future, a small glimmer of hope appears. The island will soon be doomed and reduced to ashes but only six people can be saved on a boat going west. As necessary, the mayor of the island, a doctor, a soldier, a pregnant mother and a religious figure have been chosen. The final moments arrive and only one more person can be taken on the boat. Unfortunately the only people around in the vicinity are a prostitute and a drug dealer. One more person needs to be taken on the boat no matter who it is. Six bodies will fare much better than five in the new land wherever they arrive. But the boat must leave within seconds. Who should take the last place? –grosenbaum
I choose Box A -jeff(confessional)
The prostitute should definitley be rescued instead of the drug-dealer.
Just think of this: What drives a women to resort to prostitution? In virtually every case, the women is a victim of severe poverty. She has no choice. This particular prostitute might be an un-educated African woman who's only possible service is her body. She might be a low class Indian woman who is forced into prostitution becasue of her religious caste. There are so many horrible possibilities -- any of which are legit since there is no specification by Grosenbaum.
Unlike prostitutes, drug-dealers do it to themselves. They have a choice.
There are SO MANY people -- even teenagers, who would rather make a living selling dope then make an honest living. These people are the plague of society. And, yet, they can never reform. These make money off of peoples pain. They make money off peoples suffering. It's stomach turning. I have seen them selling coke to little kids. I once saw one forcing an addicted woman to pay double her regular price. If you ever walked down the west side of San Fransisco, you'd witness these things happening again and again. I've seen it all -- and I go there so rarely. It's mind-numbingly sick what some people would do for a little bit of money when they have so many other choices..... –omar (opening argument)
My counterpart would have you believe that every drug dealer is evil and unworthy to live. That may be true if you only look at their impact into society as that of a distributor of illegal narcotics. My client has never been convicted of such a crime, however I am not here to defend those remarks. Please note that I used the term "distributor" in my previous statement...that term alone should convince you to allow my client safe passage on this vessel and I will explain why. Any new society or civilization requires someone to control the community goods for a fair and even "distribution" among its members. Anyone with these delicate and sometimes unrewarding skills would be invaluable in times of harsh winters or unhospitable summers when resources may be depleted. Also, my client would be available to join with the soldier in times of war or times of advanced hostilities from neighboring landowners. Anyone who knows of how life on the street can be will know that any "drug dealer" is capable of protecting themselves and their property. My client would be valuable in trade negotiations with those neighbors that are peaceful and willing to share their bounty. Trade negotiations normally require an analysis of both parties' needs and promote a fair and even environment. My client could, if the need requires, determine areas where his own personal community could gain more than is given. All these skills are honed and developed over many years of "drug dealing". His skills would be invaluable to any society trying to rebuild from scratch. –jeff (opening argument)
